In addition to EC 5 »Design and construction of timber structures«, the HBV shall be standardised. In preparation for this, several research institutions in Europe are currently working on a technical specification.

A TCC system with typical span values is a superior system for dwelling houses and administrative buildings

A comparison study of different timbered and timber-composite ceiling systems published by the civil engineer Christin Leopold of the Technical University of Darmstadt deals specifically with the relative costs of the different systems. Although this study concerns new buildings that are subject to other preconditions in terms of installation options, this publication offers valuable information for any economic feasibility study.

The study shows that TCC ceilings in dwelling houses and administrative buildings will beat all other systems in terms of cost, once a span of 5 m is exceeded. Other systems only become economically more advantageous for buildings with spans upwards of 10 m.

In connection with these results, it is also important to mention, that only a few of the investigated supporting structures are capable of being advantageously implemented in refurbishment projects, since the site logistics differ fundamentally from those applicable to new building construction. Generally speaking, it is not possible to incorporate larger elements in old buildings. Another advantage of the use of the TCC composite system in refurbishment projects is that, in many cases, the living accommodation below the TCC refurbishment level remains habitable during the period of refurbishment.
