Sound insulation standards and their application are frequently  difficult to reconcile.

Not infrequently, the key objective in existing buildings is to harmonise different protection requirements of different users. Practical experience suggests that it is best to establish the sound attenuation level by reference to local building construction regulations.

Where a new component is installed, the recognised rules of the art apply. In existing older buildings this can lead to conflicting objectives which should preferably established and resolved during the planning phase. Where  a Principal or Purchaser of an older building requires an enhanced level of sound insulation, this should always be agreed in advance, writing. We recommend use of Supplement 2 to DIN 4109 and the VDI 4100 references values as the basis for decision.
