Sound will get to its target by any circuitous route
The German DIN Standard109 requires the following sound attenuation levels to be achieved for living accommodation ceilings:
footfall sound < 53 dB
airborne sound > 54 dB
The Elascon Timber-Concrete Composite provides for static functionality of the necessary mass with the patented and fully licensed SFix shear connectors which prevent relative displacement between the timber beam and the concrete.
Apart from the area, it is also necessary to allow for flanking transmission through walls and adjacent components when planning sound attenuation. Any good attenuation result for one surface may be rendered ineffective by secondary transmission or flanking transmission (in older buildings often through old chimneys, old electrical conduits, heating ducts, rigidly supported beam ends, etc.).

The Elascon Timber-Concrete Composite system based on an existing timber-beamed ceiling will increase the level of sound insulation tremendously. With existing structural measures (decoupling on the upper side, suspended spring ceiling on the underside) the structural properties can be closely restored to the level in a new building, or even improved beyond that level. The ability to assess and interpret the measured results for an existing building and the decision about any necessary structures for improvement presupposes sound experience and years of study. Over a period of many years, we have been able to develop a forecasting model which provides reliable information. However, if exact data are needed, there is no other way than independent sound assessment directly in the building.
