The beams of a timbered ceiling will withstand fire for longer than you might believe. As part of a Timber-Concrete Composite Ceiling, they will become a modern supporting structure that will provide fire protection.
Using the TCC system to meet building standards: We know how it works
The DIN 4102 Standard recognizes flammability classes F30, F60, F90, F120, and basically distinguishes between A (non-inflammable) and B (flammable). These classifications mean that the supporting structure must withstand the effects of fire for at least 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes.
Basically, a Timber/Concrete composite belongs into flammability class B (flammable); this is because of the wood content of the structure. Escape routes such as staircases, etc. must normally built to comply with flammability class A. The higher the number of floors of a building, the more stringent the fire protection requirements. If no exemption is granted (rules for the preservation of existing buildings), loft extensions in multi-storey-buildings - especially above building class 4, must be implemented as F90B structures.
We have tested until it got too hot for us
Apart from the fire protection designs pursuant to Eurocode 5.1.2 (supporting structures that meet fire risks), Elascon has access to a large number of standard structural designs, inclusive of test certificates, that will enable your specialist planner to identify valuable structural designs. Questions about the residual mathematical fire resistance of an old straw/rendering/clay ceiling and how an expensive fire protection lining underneath (Promat, etc.) might be avoided can be answered truthfully, with details of any costs.
Jointly with a highly regarded industrial partner dealing with gypsum products, Elascon has prepared a plethora of test certificates for a variety of timbered ceiling superstructures. Based on these numerous »live« flammability tests (subject to a consulting fee) we will prepare building-specific opinions complete with supporting test certificates to cover your specific building project. Take advantage of our know-how. Let us plan for an optimal level of fire protection of your existing building!
