In some circumstances the high ductility (elongation/deformability) of the timber+concrete-concrete structure may even become a life-saving factor, for example in the event of an earthquake.
Wherever there is high seismic activity, it is worth looking at intelligent composite structures when refurbishing timbered ceilings. In a serious seismic event, the composite floor/ceiling structure helps to dissipate peak loading and will absorb a large part of the movement energy that needs to be accommodated. The high residual load bearing capacity in the event of failure furthermore affords inhabitants and rescuers a maximum level of protection.
